Beyond the Lens: Why Clients Choose Photographers for Both the Result & the Experience
We photographers often get caught up in the aesthetics – the perfect lighting, the flawless composition, the final, polished image. And while undeniably important, the "end result" is only one piece of the puzzle. Increasingly, clients are seeking out photographers not just for their technical skills, but for the experience they bring to the table.
Take Sara Damon from East Digital Marketing, for example. As a modern digital marketer who leverages social media and Pinterest as a key part of her business model, Sara understands the power of visually appealing content. For her own brand, she wanted to create a winter social media campaign that showcased her own visual initiatives and inspired her audience through multiple mediums. To bring her vision to life, she meticulously curated a Pinterest board filled with inspiration – fun blurs, candid moments, and a distinctly Gen Z aesthetic that was both cool and authentic.
This wasn't our first time working together. I previously photographed Sara to help promo her performance at the Brooklyn Music Kitchen, capturing her vibrant personality in a series of dynamic portraits. I then had the opportunity to document her performance in Brooklyn, capturing the raw energy and emotion of the event. These experiences allowed me to build a strong rapport with Sara as a photography client, understand her unique style, and anticipate her needs for this latest project.
For her winter social media campaign, Sara sought to capture the essence of her Pinterest board – the raw, "perfectly imperfect" vibe that resonated with her brand and would inspire her audience. We collaborated closely to translate her vision into a successful photo shoot. Our shoot in SoHo was a testament to this collaborative approach. We moved away from rigid poses and staged setups, opting for candid moments and embracing the unpredictable energy of the city streets, pizza love and taxi cab features. The focus was on capturing Sara's genuine personality and showcasing the effortless cool of her brand, aligning perfectly with the inspiration she had gathered on her Pinterest board.
This experience highlights a crucial shift in the client-photographer relationship. Clients are no longer passive recipients of a service; they are active participants in the creative process. They seek photographers who:
Understand their vision: Photographers who actively listen to their clients' goals, understand their brand, and translate their ideas into compelling visuals. In Sara's case, this meant understanding her Pinterest board and translating its essence into a successful photo shoot for her own brand, while also drawing on my previous experiences of photographing her in different contexts.
Provide a comfortable and collaborative environment: Shoots should be enjoyable and stress-free, fostering a sense of trust and allowing clients to feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Embrace flexibility and adaptability: The best photographers are those who can adapt to unexpected situations, embrace spontaneity, and are willing to deviate from the initial plan to achieve the best possible outcome.
Offer a unique and personalized experience: Each client is unique, and their photography experience should reflect that. Photographers who can tailor their approach to individual needs and create a memorable and enjoyable experience will build lasting client relationships.
Ultimately, the most successful photography experiences are a harmonious blend of artistry and collaboration. By prioritizing both the end result and the client experience, photographers can build strong relationships, create impactful work, and achieve lasting success.
